Couples Caps

Thank yew for showing up.

Last weekend I was commissioned to create a ‘couples hat’ and over the years of hat making this has always been a project that’s been on the back of my mind, so I was stoked when this opportunity arose. Better yet, it was ordered by a great fellow from my home town who now lives in the adjacent province of Nova Scotia.

Having chose the ‘Leisure Cap’ style, the client wanted something between a light grey and charcoal, with minimal colour accents that would compliment each partner. The underside of the brims, the back edges and the slide-adjuster of each hat were highlighted using ‘Royal Blue’ and ‘Salmon’. To further the detail, on the top side of the brims the second stitch line was also accented with matching colours, along with criss-crossed eyelet colours.

Check out this series of photos that further augments the stoke:

Red Baron

As Christmas soon approaches and while the corduroy train’s-a-rollin’, I thought it would esthetically pleasing to make the same build as last week - but in an eye-poppin’ candy apple red.

This project uses a heavyweight cotton/polyester blend; it has great stretch and gives the hat a more form-fitting feel. The corduroy on this is larger due to the thickness of the blend compared to the green corduroy from last week which had more ripples than this given textile.

Each hat is lined with a fusible black mesh inter-facing and paired with red eyelets, red stitching, red cord stopper, and a customized red corduroy sweatband for the bucket hat only.

Introducing Red Baron:

Green Machine

Corduroy, corduroy, corduroy, man do I love working with corduroy - it has everything you want in a fabric. It’s got that classic rippled touch, the mellow parallels, the coarseness of its fibers pops, and is always sure to catch an eye by every passer-by, man. The weight, stretch, and steez makes this textile even more suitable for my hat making quest.

For this project, I went back and fine-tuned my regular templates and hybridized them with some current patterns. Over time I began to notice, and what I don’t want to call ‘flaws’, but imperfections in my original templating. So I took a peep back and just made my templates more sound, more form-fitting designs engineered with the latest technical know-how; because I push myself to continue to create unreal products for my consumers. Push the boundaries bobcat!

‘Art’ is not anything serious or exclusive: it is the smell of oil paint, Henri Murger’s Vie de Boheme, corduroy trousers, the operatic Italian model: but the poetry, above all, of linseed oil and turpentine.

Introducing the Green Machine, this project contains the new standard builds for the upcoming Yew Year.

Reclaim: Lacoste

Thank yew for stopping by to check out todays post.

This release incorporates two things that are very important to me.

  • first, one of my all-time favorite brands Lacoste,

  • and second, my relish for the game of golf.

This project was created using a personal collection of Lacoste Polos that I had collected over the span of my years, both purchasing and thrifting. There was always just something about the style of this polo that grabbed my attention growing up. The iconic crocodile against vibrantly dyed pique cotton screamed ‘buy me’. So I did, and so I continue to, both in retail and in thrifting.

This release also features a new template I wanted to try out. It is sort of a ‘5-Panel’ hybrid, where the top and side panels merge to create a more sporty fitting. The Lacoste Crocodile is presented front and centered on the main panel, notice the accented brim stitching to pair with the green of the croc. The hats all feature a custom made headband reclaimed using the collar of the polo; the given elasticity of this part of the garment makes for a truly fitted, and comfortable sitting. These hats are further lined with a breathable sweatguard interfacing to add extra weight and support. The side panels feature standard double vented 5mm eyelets and are fastened with YKK Slide Adjusters. Original garment tags hang towards the back of the hat for extra flare and to finish the project my designers label was placed inside along the back sweatband.

I proudly present, golf inspired, reclaimed Lacoste polo ‘Sport 5 Panels’ in Black, Purple, Pearl, Tangerine, and Sport Orange.

Reclaim: Stüssy

Welcome, and thank yew for stopping by to check out this blog post.

One of my longtime favorite streetwear brands has always been Stüssy. I would consider them one of the oldest and still current brands that continue to spark my interest in everything they release. A brand that inspires me to design, as well as influence found throughout my designs.

Years back I travelled to Australia and New Zealand, during this trip I acquired a select few of Stüssy’s ever-famous Rayon Surf Shirts. In 2013, Byron Bay, Australia I purchased the vibrant red Double Paisley print. In 2014, Raglan, New Zealand I purchased the off green and black stripe River Camo print. In 2018, Gold Coast, Australia, I found the black Bones print in a Salvation Army.

Each of these shirts holds many memories and have all seen about a dozen countries, but, it was my pleasure to use them in a project that tested my creative design to a new level and which produced an ultimately cool release for all my fans and following.

I was able to create a Standard Street 5 Panel and a Boonie Bucket Hat with an extended brim out of each shirt. Using the accessories found on each garment I was able to add some cool features to each hat. Using the breast pocket for a back pouch on the bucket hat, and the buttons as eyelet replacements. Each hat also comes equipped with an adjustable chinstrap for them windy days b’y.

Enough babbling, check these out:
