Reclaim: Stüssy

Welcome, and thank yew for stopping by to check out this blog post.

One of my longtime favorite streetwear brands has always been Stüssy. I would consider them one of the oldest and still current brands that continue to spark my interest in everything they release. A brand that inspires me to design, as well as influence found throughout my designs.

Years back I travelled to Australia and New Zealand, during this trip I acquired a select few of Stüssy’s ever-famous Rayon Surf Shirts. In 2013, Byron Bay, Australia I purchased the vibrant red Double Paisley print. In 2014, Raglan, New Zealand I purchased the off green and black stripe River Camo print. In 2018, Gold Coast, Australia, I found the black Bones print in a Salvation Army.

Each of these shirts holds many memories and have all seen about a dozen countries, but, it was my pleasure to use them in a project that tested my creative design to a new level and which produced an ultimately cool release for all my fans and following.

I was able to create a Standard Street 5 Panel and a Boonie Bucket Hat with an extended brim out of each shirt. Using the accessories found on each garment I was able to add some cool features to each hat. Using the breast pocket for a back pouch on the bucket hat, and the buttons as eyelet replacements. Each hat also comes equipped with an adjustable chinstrap for them windy days b’y.

Enough babbling, check these out:

Cosmic Mechanism

Thanks to all for dropping by!

I am super excited to share with yew, the beginning of Bucket Season!

Since the start of April, I have been releasing a bucket hat per day over the foreseeable Spring months. Although this dang-nab virus has been throwing a wrench in everyone’s lives (for the most part), I have been spending heaps of time in the sewing studio to create and design steezy duds for all the homies. Father Winter has pretty much scrammed and the sun has begun its pump, the flower buds are sprouting, and the skateparks are clearing!

While yew’re out on your social distancing walks, yew may as well look as ‘sick’ as possible!

This is the First set of Seven sets of Bucket Hats that I will be releasing.

In total, 46 hats will consecutively be released per day.

At the end of every drop, I will create another blog post and upload the products to the webstore; so throughout the week keep your eyes peeled for the one yew love.

________________________________

Don, how did all of this start?

Well, let me tell yew - the concept of this brand has always been to provide steez gear, developed from sustainably sourced fabrics and textiles, primarily found through thrifting. Those reading, and maybe yew don’t know the thrill, but yew know the eye-opening, jaw-dropping, heart-stopping moment when you come across ‘thrift gold’. Well, this was one of those days.

Seven bundles of 25 sqft fabric samples, from a company called “5th Avenue Designs Inc.”

Each bundle contained between 5-10 different samples. Each sample using different color swatches. These are genuinely old, as each bundle came with a product tag that didn’t even contain a website, just a stamp product card, before the internet, way gnarly brah.

Enough mumbo-jumbo? Yeah, I’ll let the designs please your eyes from this point on.

I give yew,

Cosmic Mechanism v 1.0 - 7.0

Navajo-LD

According to Navajo tradition, weaving is the most ancient and sacred practice of their people. Two spirits, the Spider People, brought hemp seeds to the Navajo. Spider Man taught them to make the loom, while Spider Woman taught them how to weave so that they could always provide for themselves. From this, the entire Navajo conception of society, balance, harmony, and prosperity was founded. In this history, we see that weaving actually rivals farming or hunting in terms of importance to the Navajo.

Good Tidings yew all! Thanks for peeping by to check out this hat explanation.

This cap was an extremely fun project for a few reasons. One, an old friend commissioned the build for his brothers’ birthday. Two, if yew know me, I have slight issues with self-diagnosed OCD, and the pattern of this fabric really made me think hard about the initial cuts. Three, ultimately the look and feel of this fabric. This fabric came from my local Value Village, and buddy, I got yards and yards of this material and I am so grateful because it is so stee! So if this hat interest yew, I can recreate it, or turn it into a Bucket Hat or 5-Panel.

Ultimately, and I know I say it a lot, but this is an all-time favorite. I found it back in 2016 and it’s honestly been sitting in reserve until a time when I deemed necessary to use it. Well, the time is now, as I am very confident in my sewing machine skills and design techniques. I wouldn’t consider this a denim, but it does honestly have the feel, weight, and look of it. The colors featured are mainly a washed-out black, a beautiful violet, faded red, cream, and teal.

Upon researching some history about the Native-American Navajo tribes, I came to find out that their people believed they came through some sort of reversed reincarnation. Going through separate stages of life until eventually becoming humans. What brought them through these ‘underworlds’ is what they considered their deity ‘The Supreme Wind’ who gives life to all things on our earth.

That being said, and being a hat-maker, I named this hat as a pun. When a gust of wind comes along and you are wearing a cap, the common phrase we all know growing up; hold on to your hat. Navajo-ld on to your hat m8.

  • Vintage Navajo Pattern

  • Yew Leather Circle Emblem

  • Black 4mm Eyelets

  • YKK Slide Adjuster

  • Black Stitching

This was a custom ordered project from a newly befriended homie, Fletcher Sayia, The Spice Lord. Sometime back in December Fletcher had come across my designs in a storefront window in Hoboken, NJ. Where my products can be found for sale in an art gallery owned by the Roig Collection Family. Fletcher had made his original purchase in Hoboken and reached out to me directly over the phone to chat about his next purchase and a custom order that he and his daughter could sport together.

Fletcher is one of those rad guys who truly supports and emphasizes the importance of small businesses and purchasing true handmade quality to keep guys like me and other artists afloat. I can always count on receiving a dm-slide throughout the week, fire emojis on my insta-story content, and the occasional Whatsapp to check in on me. Truly blessed to have met this legend and all the hype he brings forward in my craft. An honorary Yew Crew member, and cannot wait to link up and shred a surf in NJ once all this global corona madness settles.

This pair of hats was made for himself and his two year old daughter, Reece:

  • Thick Woven Upholstery Grade

  • Yew Woven Label

  • White 4mm Eyelets

  • YKK Slide Adjuster

  • Ivory Stitching

Green Crimplene

a wonderful feeling for fashion, as leading houses have already discovered. It looks pleasantly weighty, yet feels light as a feather. It feels soft, yet can take any amount of wear.
________________________________

Hey yew all, thanks for checking in on today’s hat post.

This hat features a vintage fabric that can date back to the late ’50s called ‘Crimplene’. It is a type of synthetic polyester yarn used in all fields of fashion in Britain until the ’70s. It was a great lightweight, a no-itch polymer that kept its shape and proved to be wrinkle resistant. Check out the sweet-ass weave of this fabric though, it reminds me of some sort of arctic lime green tiger print or something! meow!

There wasn’t much of this fabric to begin with - so it makes this hat ever more of a gem. There is a 2016 prototype I made for my father and another in Berlin. These are the most recent four that were designed this past November.

  • Vintage Green/White Crimplene

  • Yew Woven Label

  • White 4mm Eyelets

  • YKK Slide Adjuster

  • Emerald Stitching

These four are available right HERE

I give yew,

GREEN CRIMPLENE

yew, yew, yew & yew

I apologize for the lack of content, but sometimes hat-making can get quite exhausting - both physically and mentally. So I had the opportunity to travel to the Cayman Islands at the start of March with my two top homies Phil and Johnny.

Amongst having one of the greatest times ever, a revolution emerged.

The Pinky Pointer, can be used for pretty near anything you want to put your attention on or direct it towards. The true multi-functional finger. Step aside index finger, your time is over. Point this way, point that way, get his attention, get her attention, their attention, everything is more enjoyable when the pinky gets goin’.

Use is gently, snap it off from the hip firmly, use the top of your thumbs knuckle as a scope and snipe people out, hold your drink and point with it, it’s cool. We don’t know why, but it is easy and very effective to use. Try it out for free, for the first week, and let us know, or if you see me out and need a further explanation, lessons are free.

Look how happy everyone is:

Paisley Power

The paisley design was commonly associated with rebellion; it was a statement of non-conformity, a welcome alternative to the preceding sober mod fashion trends. It was the perfect print for the androgynous hedonistic counterculture of the hippies.

The hippie look is strongly linked to the psychedelic "Summer of Love" when 100,000 people came together in Haight-Ashbury, a district of San Francisco, California to share their common beliefs such as rejecting consumerist values and encouraging pacifism.

Paisley patterns and other fabrics from around the world helped encourage a spirit of multiculturalism and, for the wearer, were visual statements of this principle.

Welcome back to the second part of this explanation series and I hope everyone had a great weekend! Apologies for no content posted over the weekend but was shredding with the homies on a little boarding mission to Martok in Chester, NS.

This hat features a beautiful vintage paisley print, which incorporates both small and large paisley combinations and floral attributes to the print as well. To further amplify its rad-ness, the fabric is screen printed with gold ink outlining certain features of the textile.

Heavy on the Teal, a faded Purple, a nice blush Red, and hints of Rose, Beige, and Black.

This is the second set of five:

  • Vintage Paisley Cotton/Polyester

  • Yew Woven Label

  • White 4mm Eyelets

  • Plastic Clip Closure

  • Aqua & Buckskin Stitching

Only two remain, available HERE

I give yew,

Paisley Power
