Couples Caps

Thank yew for showing up.

Last weekend I was commissioned to create a ‘couples hat’ and over the years of hat making this has always been a project that’s been on the back of my mind, so I was stoked when this opportunity arose. Better yet, it was ordered by a great fellow from my home town who now lives in the adjacent province of Nova Scotia.

Having chose the ‘Leisure Cap’ style, the client wanted something between a light grey and charcoal, with minimal colour accents that would compliment each partner. The underside of the brims, the back edges and the slide-adjuster of each hat were highlighted using ‘Royal Blue’ and ‘Salmon’. To further the detail, on the top side of the brims the second stitch line was also accented with matching colours, along with criss-crossed eyelet colours.

Check out this series of photos that further augments the stoke:

Green Machine

Corduroy, corduroy, corduroy, man do I love working with corduroy - it has everything you want in a fabric. It’s got that classic rippled touch, the mellow parallels, the coarseness of its fibers pops, and is always sure to catch an eye by every passer-by, man. The weight, stretch, and steez makes this textile even more suitable for my hat making quest.

For this project, I went back and fine-tuned my regular templates and hybridized them with some current patterns. Over time I began to notice, and what I don’t want to call ‘flaws’, but imperfections in my original templating. So I took a peep back and just made my templates more sound, more form-fitting designs engineered with the latest technical know-how; because I push myself to continue to create unreal products for my consumers. Push the boundaries bobcat!

‘Art’ is not anything serious or exclusive: it is the smell of oil paint, Henri Murger’s Vie de Boheme, corduroy trousers, the operatic Italian model: but the poetry, above all, of linseed oil and turpentine.

Introducing the Green Machine, this project contains the new standard builds for the upcoming Yew Year.

Interested how it is all made? Here is a high-speed video of me creating all (3) of these hats!

This was a custom ordered project from a newly befriended homie, Fletcher Sayia, The Spice Lord. Sometime back in December Fletcher had come across my designs in a storefront window in Hoboken, NJ. Where my products can be found for sale in an art gallery owned by the Roig Collection Family. Fletcher had made his original purchase in Hoboken and reached out to me directly over the phone to chat about his next purchase and a custom order that he and his daughter could sport together.

Fletcher is one of those rad guys who truly supports and emphasizes the importance of small businesses and purchasing true handmade quality to keep guys like me and other artists afloat. I can always count on receiving a dm-slide throughout the week, fire emojis on my insta-story content, and the occasional Whatsapp to check in on me. Truly blessed to have met this legend and all the hype he brings forward in my craft. An honorary Yew Crew member, and cannot wait to link up and shred a surf in NJ once all this global corona madness settles.

This pair of hats was made for himself and his two year old daughter, Reece:

  • Thick Woven Upholstery Grade

  • Yew Woven Label

  • White 4mm Eyelets

  • YKK Slide Adjuster

  • Ivory Stitching

I give yew,
