According to Navajo tradition, weaving is the most ancient and sacred practice of their people. Two spirits, the Spider People, brought hemp seeds to the Navajo. Spider Man taught them to make the loom, while Spider Woman taught them how to weave so that they could always provide for themselves. From this, the entire Navajo conception of society, balance, harmony, and prosperity was founded. In this history, we see that weaving actually rivals farming or hunting in terms of importance to the Navajo.

Good Tidings yew all! Thanks for peeping by to check out this hat explanation.

This cap was an extremely fun project for a few reasons. One, an old friend commissioned the build for his brothers’ birthday. Two, if yew know me, I have slight issues with self-diagnosed OCD, and the pattern of this fabric really made me think hard about the initial cuts. Three, ultimately the look and feel of this fabric. This fabric came from my local Value Village, and buddy, I got yards and yards of this material and I am so grateful because it is so stee! So if this hat interest yew, I can recreate it, or turn it into a Bucket Hat or 5-Panel.

Ultimately, and I know I say it a lot, but this is an all-time favorite. I found it back in 2016 and it’s honestly been sitting in reserve until a time when I deemed necessary to use it. Well, the time is now, as I am very confident in my sewing machine skills and design techniques. I wouldn’t consider this a denim, but it does honestly have the feel, weight, and look of it. The colors featured are mainly a washed-out black, a beautiful violet, faded red, cream, and teal.

Upon researching some history about the Native-American Navajo tribes, I came to find out that their people believed they came through some sort of reversed reincarnation. Going through separate stages of life until eventually becoming humans. What brought them through these ‘underworlds’ is what they considered their deity ‘The Supreme Wind’ who gives life to all things on our earth.

That being said, and being a hat-maker, I named this hat as a pun. When a gust of wind comes along and you are wearing a cap, the common phrase we all know growing up; hold on to your hat. Navajo-ld on to your hat m8.

This was a custom ordered project from a newly befriended homie, Fletcher Sayia, The Spice Lord. Sometime back in December Fletcher had come across my designs in a storefront window in Hoboken, NJ. Where my products can be found for sale in an art gallery owned by the Roig Collection Family. Fletcher had made his original purchase in Hoboken and reached out to me directly over the phone to chat about his next purchase and a custom order that he and his daughter could sport together.

Fletcher is one of those rad guys who truly supports and emphasizes the importance of small businesses and purchasing true handmade quality to keep guys like me and other artists afloat. I can always count on receiving a dm-slide throughout the week, fire emojis on my insta-story content, and the occasional Whatsapp to check in on me. Truly blessed to have met this legend and all the hype he brings forward in my craft. An honorary Yew Crew member, and cannot wait to link up and shred a surf in NJ once all this global corona madness settles.

This pair of hats was made for himself and his two year old daughter, Reece:

  • Thick Woven Upholstery Grade

  • Yew Woven Label

  • White 4mm Eyelets

  • YKK Slide Adjuster

  • Ivory Stitching

Olive Corduroy Cap

Hello Crew,

This is not a hat explanation, more so an information update.

The 5 Panel isn’t everyone’s thing, and I get that, it’s hardly my thing anymore, obviously, it used to be, considering the minor mass quantity of handmade ones all over this website. People always were asking to switch it up, so I have, and the reason it’s coming so late in the game is that I wanted to perfect the design of them.

Here are the first available ‘Standard Leisure Caps’
there is a limited quantity of this material,
made to order HERE for yew,

thank yew.
